Faculty Senate Update – September 16, 2021

Dear NMSU Faculty,

We hope everyone is doing as well as is humanly possible! It’s time for the regularly scheduled Faculty Senate meeting update for the meeting held September 2, 2021.

Please remember that we post our Reports on the Senate site, the Chair/Vice Chair Reports page.

Faculty Senate Meeting: September 2, 2021

  • Guests:
    1. Board of Regents Chair Ammu Devasthali was invited to and attended the New Senator Orientation and Faculty Senate Meeting.
    2. Laura Madson, Co-Chair of the Faculty Compensation Studies & Steering Committee and Provost Carol Parker provided an update on the Faculty Compensation Projects.
  • New Business:
    1. Introduction of Proposition 01-2122 A Proposal to Amend Administration Policy Rule 4.61 Transfer Credit for Prior Learning (S. Beck (Lib). This was assigned to the Curriculum and Programming Committee.
      • Summary for Proposition 01-21/22: Faculty Senate Bill 01-20/21 clarifies and updates transfer credit policies found in the NMSU ARP and the NMSU Catalog. Over the past several years, the Associate Provost for Program Development and Accreditation collaborated with campus presidents and representatives from each campus about defining credit for prior learning. This change will standardize opportunities for all campuses to award credit based on prior learning (workforce certifications and training), making prior learning transfer credit consistent with other institutions and increasing NMSU’s competitive status with its peers.

Policy Information

The following policies are being reviewed. Remember that at the bottom of ARP pages there is a link to sharepoint site for review and comment on policy and rule proposals. You are welcome to post your review/comment to the sharepoint site, email me, at juparra at nmsu.edu, or visit me in my zoom office hours on Wednesdays, 12-1pm.

  • REV ARP 1.10 – NMSU System Policy Framework, for review or comment by October 4, 2021. This is the policy work we have noted for some time.
  • PROV ARP 16.32 – COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols, for review or comment thru October 26, 2021. This is the Provisional Policy sent out on the week of August 30.
  • PROV REV ARP 3.25 – Prohibition of All Forms of Unlawful Discrimination. Part 1. D. a sentence is added at the end and in part 5, the second paragraph is added. These edits are made in part to identify that federal and state law will supersede.

Other Activities

  • Pandemic Action Team:
  • Shared Governance Mindset Activities: Four members of the Faculty Senate participated in the Building a Shared Governance Mindset Activities (Week of August 30). One outcome we are immediately implementing is to start inviting members of the Board of Regents to Faculty Senate meetings. Other outcomes from Chair perspective include 1) a collaborative commitment to continue the work of relationship and community building and 2) promoting values of EID. And as an individual commitment, I will pursue deepening skills of listening and harnessing my passion/emotion more productively. Finally, I am recommending that we invite the project facilitator, Howard Teibel, to a future Faculty Senate Meeting or set up a Faculty Town Hall for this.
  • Standing CommitteesStanding Committees will be working to support the newly established structure. Here are the current committee activities:
    • Budget & Resources – discussing the Faculty Compensation Projects
    • Curriculum & Programming – Assigned review and recommendation for Proposition 01-2122 A Proposal to Amend Administration Policy Rule 4.61 Transfer Credit for Prior Learning (S. Beck (Lib).
    • Research & Creative Activity has accepted the task to continue the work towards setting up Faculty Talk 2.0.
    • University Planning has accepted the task of developing the proposition needed to update the Faculty Senate Constitution in regards to representation for the merged College of Health, Education, and Social Transformation.
    • Student Success and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees are identifying their roles.

Below are the dates, days, and times for all Fall semester 2021 Meetings.
